Any document page using that master shows that particular page’s number. The number will now display the prefix of the current master page. Select the styled page number, go up to the Type menu, then navigate to Insert Special Character > Markers > Current Page Number. After you’ve styled it to your liking, it’s time for the automatic part of the operation. Start by placing your page text frame in position on the master page, entering in an actual page number, then styling that number. This allows for easy updating whether you want to change a number’s text styling or its position on the page. While putting page numbers on each individual document page certainly works, most of the time you’ll want to put them on a master page instead. Although page numbering in InDesign can be automatically generated, the actual design and placement requires a bit of preparation and setup on the part of the designer.
